It is important for anyone woman to have Breast Cancer Awareness. This will help protect them because through awareness they can help catch it early enough for treatment. Aside from the occurrence of skin cancer, the occurrence of breast cancer is the next most common cancer to affect women.

Recognizing

You need to know your family history to help assess the risk factor of having it. If your mother or grandmother has had it, you definitely have a higher risk of getting it. So ask your relatives to find out how prevalent it is in your family’s health history.

Getting regular screenings from your doctor. A clinical-type breast exam should be given every year starting at 20 years of age and then at 40 years of age it needs to be done once a year. A mammogram should be gotten every year after age 40 if you are at normal risk of getting breast tumors. More often if you are high risk.

Know your breasts so that you know when changes occur. Please exam them visually as well as physically at least once a month if not more. Notice and contact your physician if any of the following occurs.

1. Changes occur in the shape or size of your breast.

2. If your breast has a lump, thickening, it can also get a knot that is hard.

3. If the breast skin develops puckering or dimpling.

4. If it becomes swollen, warm, or has redness or darkens in color.

5. If the nipple gets a rash or scaly type sore that itches.

6. A discharge starts leaking from your nipple.

7. If you nipple starts to pull in or the other sections of your breast.

8. A pain that is new comes up and will not cease.

It is important to have a healthy lifestyle to prevent this cancer. Get to a healthy weight for you and maintain by eating a well-balanced diet that is low fat. Exercise on a daily basis and you should watch how much alcohol you drink.

Participating

There are cancer walks all the time that you can do to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness. There is the pink ribbon campaign where you wear the pink ribbons to show your support for the sufferers and survivors of breast cancer. You can also get involved in fund raising to further cancer research. Volunteer to work with cancer patients; they always need volunteers in the hospitals to, if nothing else, cheer people up and onto recovery. If you are a survivor of breast cancer, the story of your battle can really help someone get through their battle. Because without your support and others like you, some 10 million Individuals may die from breast cancer within about 25 years.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. There are two types of mammograms. A screening mammogram is used to detect breast changes in women who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. It usually involves two x-rays of each breast. Mammograms make it possible to detect tumors.

A diagnostic mammogram is an x-ray of the breast used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other sign or symptom of breast cancer has been found. Signs of breast cancer may include pain, skin thickening, nipple discahrge or a change in breast size or shape. A diagnostic mammogram may also be used to evaluate changes found during a screening mammogram, or to view breast tissue when it is difficult to obtain a screening mammogram because of special circumstances, such as the presence of breast implants.

When should women begin to have mammograms?

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recommends that women age 40 and older have mammograms every 1 to 2 years.

Women at higher than average risk of breast cancer should talk with their physicians about whether to have mammograms before age 40 and how often to have them.

What are the risk factors?

As a woman gets older, her risk of having breast cancer becomes greater.

The following factors increase a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer:

Personal History.

Women who have had breast cancer are more likely to develop a second breast cancer.

Family History.

A woman’s chance of developing breast cancer is increased if her mother, sister and/or daughter have a history of breast cancer, particularly if diagnosed before age 50.

Changes seen with breast biopsy.

Women who have had two or more breast biopsies for other benign conditions also have an increased chance of developing breast cancer. This increased risk is due to the condition that led to the biopsy itself.

Genetic Alterations/Changes

Specific alterations in certain genes increase the risk of breast cancer. These alterations are rare; they are estimated to account for no more than 10% of all breast cancers.

Reproductive and Menstrual History

Women who began having periods before age 12 or who went through menopause after age 55 are at an increased risk. Women who have their first child after age 30 or who never have a child are at an increased risk.

Long-term Use of Menopausal Hormone Therapy Women who use combination estrogen-progestin menopausal hormone therapy fr more than 5 years have an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Breast Density

Breasts appear dense on a mammogram if they contain many glands and ligaments and do not have a lot of fatty tissue. Because breast cancers tend to develop in the dense breast tissue of the breast, older women whose mammograms show more dense tissue are at an increased risk.

Radiation Therapy

Women who had radiation therapy to the chest (including the breasts) before age 30 are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer throughout their lives.

DES (Diethylstilbesterol)

The drug DES was given to some pregnant women in the US between 1941 and 1971. Those who took DES during pregnancy may have a slightly higher risk.

Body Weight

Studies have found that the chances of getting breast cancer after menopause is higher in women who are overweight.

Physical Activity Levels

Women who are physically inactive throughout life may have an increased risk of breast cancer.

Alcohol

Studies suggest that the more alcohol a woman drinks, the greater her chances of developing breast cancer.

What are the chances that a woman in the United States might get breast cancer?

Age is the most important risk factor for breast cancer. The older a woman is, the greater her chance of developing breast cancer. Current rates suggest that 13.2 percent of women (or one in eight) born today will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives. This statistic is based on population averages.

How Much Does A Mammogram Cost?

Screening mammograms usually cost between $50 and $150. Most insurance companies now have laws requiring health insurance companies to reimburse all or part of the cost of screening.

Remember to check your breasts every month!

Have you know, that the breast cancer can also catch the man? Yes – it’s really true!

Have a look on the last news!

The special Risk Factors for Male Breast Cancer

- Only approximately 1-1.5% of all breast cancer cases occur in men.

- Several risk factors have been identified that make some men more likely to develop breast cancer than others.

These risk factors include:

The Age: The average age of men diagnosed with breast cancer is between 60 and 70 years old.

The history of the family:

- 20% of men with breast cancer have close female relatives who have (or have had) breast cancer.

The Radiation exposure:

- Prior exposure to radiation (usually for treatment of a cancer) is a risk factor for male breast cancer.

The Liver disease:

- If the liver is normal function, she helps with hormone metabolism by binding proteins that carry hormones in the blood. If the Man’s has liver diseases such as cirrhosis, they tend to have lower levels of androgens (male hormones) and on the other hand a higher estrogens levels (female hormones). This reality puts them at an increased risk of developing gynecomastia (non-cancerous tissue growth) and breast cancer.

Symptoms Male Breast Abnormalities

- The most male breast changes are due to benign (non-cancerous) abnormalities, such as gynecomastia (non-cancerous tissue growth)

- So, the men should report any persistent breast changes to their physicians for clinical evaluation.

-The Symptoms of male breast cancer may include:

-a breast lump,

-swelling,

-skin dimpling or puckering,

-nipple retraction (the nipple turns inward),

-redness or scaling of the nipple or breast skin,

-and nipple discharge .

How to treating Male Breast Cancer

This will be depending on the type and stage of breast cancer.

The following treatment will most likely be used:

Surgery – Radiation therapy – Chemotherapy – Hormone therapy

About the Survival Rates for Male Breast Cancer

Today, the survival rates are similar the women cancer, when the treatment of the tumour begins at the same stage.

Anyway, the male breast cancer tends to be diagnosed in later stages than female breast cancer.

The following chart is an approximate survival rate for each stage of breast cancer. The percentages are only averages. The chances of survival will differ for each man depending on his own medical situation and several other factors, including new treatment options, how he responds to treatment, etc.

STAGE 1 TUMOR SIZE less than 2 cm No Lymph Node	5year Survivalrate 100 %

STAGE 2 TUMOR SIZE Between 2-5 cm No Lymph Node 5year Survivalrate 95 %

STAGE 3 TUMOR SIZE More than 5 cm No Lymph Node 5year Survivalrate 84 %

Stage 4 TUMOR SIZE not applicable YES Survivalrate 52 %

Metastatic Breast Cancer – Causes, Symptoms And Treatment.

In women, breast cancer is the common type of cancer and it is affecting one out of eight women. At any time, this cancer may develop and the risk increases with developing of cancer as the women get older. In most of the post-menopausal women, it is common and with the increase in age will increase the risk as well.

When the cancer is spread beyond the breast, then it is said to be in metastatic state. This means that cancer has traveled from breast to another part of the body. The cells of cancer will travel through blood vessels or lymphatic system.

Causes

As of today, the breast cancer like any other forms of cancer is considered as one of the final outcomes of multiple hereditary and environmental factors. The risk of breast cancer will be increased by 70% in young people by inhaling the secondhand smoke and primarily menopausal women are affected by this.

Symptoms

So many fears are elicited by breast cancer including the ones that are related to surgery, loss of body image, death and loss of sexuality and however, if the breast caner is diagnosed earlier, then it is curable. Therefore, it always recommended doing a regular self screening of the body. Usually, the breast cancer will show thickening or lump in the breast tissues but not all the breast lumps are cancerous.

Often, the breast cancer will occur in left breast and also in the upper quadrant. Other than the lump, the indications of this cancer include skin dimpling, changes in breast shape and size, spontaneous discharge of single nipple or nipple inversion.

Treatment

In order to treat the breast cancer, controversies are still raging all over the world. The options to treat the breast cancer include chemotherapy, surgery, herceptin, hormonal therapies, radiotherapy and other complementary treatments.

Whenever the tumor is localized, surgery is the mainstay of the treatment. Some of the surgeries include the possible hormonal therapy (with aromatase inhibitor or with the tamoxifen), radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.

MammaPrint test is the first tests that became one of the first breast cancer predicator, which won the formal approval of the USFDA. This is a new type of gene test, which w
ill predict whether women with the early stage of cancer will replace in about 5 to 10 years. This test will help to influence on how aggressively the tumor in the initial stages can be treated.

ILT (Interstitial Laser thermotherapy) is one of the innovative methods that are used to treat the breast cancer through minimal invasive manner. This method does not involve any surgical procedures. This procedure will not have any adverse effect on health and during the intermediate follow-up; the survival rate of the patient is high.

Routine mammography of the women aged more than 40 to 50 years is very much recommended by many science institutes. By doing so, if there is cancer, then it can be detected at the earlier stages and it can be treated effectively at early stages.
